I knew August would be interesting. I knew going into August that I would not have any time to watch dramas, especially start new dramas. So, I decided to get stuff off my current watchlist and not start anything new. I am down to one kdrama. I know I am not going to complete that one kdrama in August, but I think I will continue just watching that drama into September and not start anything new until I finish it. HOPEFULLY, I can finish that drama soon, soon enough to start new dramas before I have to write up my current watchlist blogpost for September. That way I can start September with a clean slate and have an all new current watchlist.
DRAMAS/MOVIES I COMPLETED IN AUGUST
Between all of the traveling I did in August as well as the Olympics airing for a good chunk of the month, I knew time was limited. I am OBSESSED with the Olympics, especially the Summer Olympics. So, all of my watch time I normally have for Asian dramas was dedicated to all of the sports I was watching. I also traveled a bit in August. Actually, the day this blogpost and podcast episode comes out, I am actually in New York with my family and not at home. Because I knew this would be my life in August, I made the choice to empty my current watchlist and not start any new dramas in August. Overall, I was pretty successful, in my opinion.
Yu Yu Hakusho (Anime) (NETFLIX): This anime was PURE nostalgia for me. I had watched this anime 20+ years ago when I was a child and had not watched it since. I rewatched it for a podcast episode I released back in August. I definitely enjoyed the rewatch. Some of the jokes did not age well and would not fly in 2024. I also disliked the romance but mostly because it was a secondary storyline. This anime is not a romance drama. This anime is action packed and just excellent entertainment. I even watched the seasons that I never got to watch as a kid. I still love the story and the characters. The animation is still good and lives up to the times even if it was made 30 years ago. JUST A CLASSIC!
RATING: 9/10
Yu Yu Hakusho (Jdrama) (NETFLIX): I rewatched the anime to finally get around to watching the live adaption. The live adaption was just okay. I recommend you watch the live adaption first before the anime, especially if you have never seen the anime. I think you will like the live adaption more that way. The characters were well crafted and did justice to the anime. It was good acting. The story was the big problem. The drama tried to pack too much into 5 episodes and it sped run through everything. It changed a lot from the anime and even left some plot points out. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't such a big fan of the anime.
RATING: 7.5/10
Mission Cross (KMovie) (NETFLIX): This is the perfect movie to just turn on after a long day or week. If you are looking for a movie that doesn't make you think a lot and just allows you to turn off your brain and enjoy, this is the movie for you. It was predictable, especially if you have seen an action movie in the last 30 years, but sometimes that is okay. A good mix of action and comedy. Some of the comedy was not my cup of tea like the bathroom jokes but other parts of the comedy worked and were hilarious to me. Everyone will find something to laugh at in this movie. It was sometimes slow but not a lot. I wish we got more scenes with the main couple and not just the end. I liked them together so, I wanted more. You can check out my full review of this movie here and on the podcast.
RATING: 8/10
Eternal Love of Dream (Cdrama) (VIKI): I wanted to like this more than I did. I was such a fan of this main couple in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. They were my favorite couple from that cdrama. They are still my favorite couple after this cdrama. I loved watching them together and their chemistry together. The couple just did not have a lot of screentime together. They were constantly apart. More than they needed to be. The drama was also WAY TO LONG! There was unnecessary drama at the end of the drama. There were also unnecessary side stories and side characters. I am just mad because I loved this couple so much and this drama did not live up to my expectations.
RATING: 7.5/10
Revenge of Others (Kdrama) (HULU): I was enjoying this drama until the last 2 episodes. Then it went downhill for me. Lots of storylines were introduced but never tied up or concluded by the end. So, the drama just ended with a lot of storylines hanging out there. The acting was great though. That was a highlight for me. Some of the motives for the crime were explained and other motives were not explained. This drama just could have been way better.
RATING: 6.5/10
NEW SEPTEMBER 2024 DRAMAS I AM EXCITED FOR:
There are many August dramas that I was excited for that I have not clicked play on. So, I am glad that I am only excited for 4 Kdramas in September. I don't even know where some of these Kdramas will land on streaming sites either. So, we will have to see what I actually end up watching in September. There are a lot of rumors for other dramas that might premiere but we all know; I don't talk about rumors. I just talk about confirmed dates here. So, I might just click play on some of the August dramas I have not clicked play on yet.
Seoul Busters (Kdrama) (DISNEY+ only so far) [PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 11, 2024]
This Kdrama caught my eye a while ago. It was previewed during one of the awards shows that air at the beginning of a new year every year. I think the network SBS wanted to air it earlier in the year but then it got pushed back until now. The combination of crime and comedy always works for me so, that was another thing that drew me to this drama. Lastly, I LOVE Kim Dong Wook. I will watch him in anything. This is his first drama for 2024, and I have been waiting for AWHILE for it. This drama also has a great supporting cast for the comedy so, I think I will like this drama for its comedy. THAT IS SO DIFFERENT FOR ME TO SAY TOO!
The Judge from Hell (Kdrama) [PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 21, 2024]
I am not quite sure what drew me to this drama and become interested in it. Maybe it was the genre of fantasy. Maybe it was the crime part of the drama, the main female lead is a judge. Maybe it reminds me of The Devil Judge just because of the name and I still have not watched that drama and I have been wanting to watch that for years. I know the Devil Judge is not supernatural. Maybe it is because the male lead is Kim Jae Young who has not done a drama in 2 years. I am not quite sure BUT I just hope it is good. I am trying to not have any expectations because I am hoping this one will surprise me. We will have to wait and see. Hopefully it comes to a legal streaming site so, I can check it out.
What Comes After Love (Kdrama) (RUMOR IS VIKI) [PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 27, 2024]
I have been looking forward to this one ever since it was announced. I, especially, have been looking forward to this drama ever since I watched Eye Love You. I really need to watch more Jdramas. This is a Kdrama though. I am really curious how they are going to handle the language and the cultural differences in this one. This also looks more angsty than Eye Love You. I love the two leads so; I am excited to see their chemistry together. I am just so curious with the crossovers we are getting between Japan and Korea. I know there are more on the way as well.
Iron Family (Kdrama) [PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 28, 2024]
Last, BUT CERTAINLY, not least, we have the replacement weekender for the weekender that I am determined to finish finally in September. I really have one reason I want to watch this and one reason only. My boy Kim Jung Hyun is in it, and it is his first weekender he has ever done. He has not done a drama yet this year except for a guest appearance in The Player Season 2. I am excited to see him back on my screen and he will remain on my screen for AWHILE because this drama is 36 episodes long. I also know he can do comedy well. Looking at the rest of the cast though, it is stacked and looks very good. I am hoping this is another weekend family drama where we get multiple couples and maybe even multiple families for the story to play around with. There has only been one teaser and no posters out yet. I am hoping for a mix of comedy, angst, romance and I think this one will deliver. The synopsis does seem a little far fetch, but we will have to see how this goes.
I may not have started any new dramas in August, but September looks like it is shaping up to be a great drama month for me. I have both new dramas to look forward too but also older dramas that I have not clicked play one. There is also Road to Kingdom: Ace to Ace that is supposed to air in September with Taemin hosting but it has no confirmed air date, yet which is why it is not on my list of things I am looking forward to in September. Just know, I am looking forward to that show when it airs. We will have to see what shows up where on streaming sites. I am actually excited to see what I start and complete in September.
